Craven: Takeaways from Week 4 around the state

Here are a few things we learned. 1. Cedar Ridge and Stony Point impressed to start the season, so talk veered away from the Round Rock Dragons in discussions over District 13-6A. Head coach Jeff Cheatham’s team reminded people that they’re the team to beat in the Round Rock ISD with a 42-32 victory over a previously unbeaten Stony Point team on Friday night. Pflugerville Hendrickson is also a team to watch in District 13-6A, but the Dragons should be the favorite entering Week 5. 2. District 25-5A just got even more confusing and interesting as Leander won its second straight game and knocked off Georgetown in the team’s opening game of district play. Georgetown was a ranked team by many outlets and Leander’s win in Week 3 was the Lions’ first win since 2013. Talk is surrounding the power trio of Cedar Park, Vandegrift and Vista Ridge, but the battle for the fourth spot between teams like Georgetown, East View, Dripping Springs and now Leander will be entertaining throughout the fall. 3. Henderson pulled away from Newton this week for an impressive win over one of the best teams in Class 3A. It was a drop-down game for Henderson, but Newton is a team that started the season off with a win over Tatum, so it's a squad that's used to playing bigger competition. Newton has now lost two straight entering this week’s game against Orangefield. The 32-8 victory over Newton makes Henderson 4-0 on the season entering its final non-district game of the season. Henderson begins district play against Carthage on Oct. 9. 4. Don’t forget about the Houston-area Class 6A teams not named Katy. Talk is always centered on Katy when we talk about big schools in Houston, but massive wins by Manvel and Pearland this week are a reminder that H-town is deeper in Class 6A this season than it has been for years. Spring Westfield was idle this week, but that is another team that could push for a state title run in 2015.
