Here are a few things we learned from around the state on Friday and Saturday. The slide for DeSoto continues. It is probably unfair to judge the Eagles for losing to IMG to fall to 0-2 after an opening-season loss to Arlington Martin, but it is still unsettling for Todd Peterman’s squad. Quarterback Tristan Wallace hasn’t played well in two games, the offense has turned the ball over too many times and the defense, while mostly strong, has allowed some big plays because the unit was on the field for so long through the first two weeks. District 8-6A isn’t an easy road, so while DeSoto probably turns it around before playoffs, it hasn’t been the start DeSoto wanted to start the season. Longview goes big on bizarre night. Longview made a statement with a 31-14 victory over Tyler High School in what proved to be a bizarre game on and off the field. The Lobos put the game away in the second quarter and smothered the Tyler defense throughout the game, but the weirdness started before the game when the originally officiating crew didn’t show up and replacements were forced to arrive late. And then during the game, something happened on the Tyler sideline that prompted a mass exodus from the stands. Watch out for Westlake. Westlake is a state title contender with Todd Dodge at the helm and junior quarterback Sam Ehlinger committed to Texas. Westlake knocked off Temple, a team that reached the state championship game at the Class 5A level in 2014. The showdown between Lake Travis and Westlake for a district championship will be the most anticipated game of the season in the Austin area. Cedar Park and Vandegrift are a close second. Both Skyline and Martin prove their strength in the same game. Dallas Skyline bounced back from a sloppy performance in Week 1 to knock off Arlington Martin, a team that beat DeSoto in Week 1 on ESPN. In a loss, however, Martin proved the Week 1 win wasn’t a fluke. Both teams had chances to win, but it was Skyline squeaking by with a 24-22 victory. Keep an eye on that other team in Cedar Park. Cedar Park Vista Ridge is a team to watch in district 25-5A. All the talk has surrounded Cedar Park and Vandegrift leading into the season, but the Rangers beat a pretty good LBJ team Friday night to throw their name in the hat. Cedar Park and Vandegrift struggled at times Friday night, and Vista Ridge may have the best defense in the area.
