Dear Texas high school football, Hey. Haven't seen you in a while. How you been? You look great. Listen, Texas high school football, there's something I've been meaning to tell you. Something I should've said a long time ago. Something you need to know. I love you, Texas high school football. I know I'm not alone in this. Across the Lone Star State today, from Canadian to Port Isabel, from El Paso to Texarkana, Texans are hailing your return. Sure, it's not until tomorrow that we get our first taste of the holiest of nights — that's Friday, of course — but there are games today, and by gum, that means you're back. We're united in our adoration because there's so much to adore. Sure, the football is great — we get to see best and brightest young athletes in the state do battle on a weekly basis. But you're so much more than that, Texas high school football. You're a communal experience, an opportunity for an entire neighborhood or village or town or city or county to come together as one. You're where bragging rights are won and hearts are broken, where talcum powder is hoisted aloft and cowbells are CLANGA'd, where tears are shed and necks are hugged. You're where a giant fake flower held on by dozens of safety pins is a point of pride; you're where halftime is a reason to stay in your seat; you're where the cheerleaders scream not because they're cheerleaders, but because they're fans. To repurpose a phrase from former DCTF contributor Bryan Curtis, you're a celebration of Texanness. Today is the first day of the 2015 Texas high school football season, and words can't describe how happy we are to see you. Love, Greg Tepper Managing Editor Dave Campbell's Texas Football
