The record books of Texas high school football (of which DCTF is the authority, ahem) are more reminiscent these days of a blog than an archive — always changing, never static. In 2014, it was good to be in the passing game. Texas high school football got a new all-time leading passer (Booker QB Hunter Lile, with 14,408 career yards), a new all-time leading receiver (Booker WR Jared Reagan, with 391 career receptions) and a new all-time single-season touchdown receiver (Navasota WR Tren’Davian Dickson, with 39 touchdown catches). What marks will come down in 2015? Here are DCTF’s picks for the most likely Texas high school football records to be broken this season. Single-Season Pass Attempts Current Record: 556 (Lake Travis’ Garrett Gilbert, 2006) Gilbert was a machine for the Cavs in 2006, guiding LT to another title by throwing…and throwing…and throwing. With so many big-armed quarterbacks out there, and so many coaches willing to let it fly so often, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see this record fall. Single-Game Pass Receptions Current Record: 22 (Dublin’s Sammy Taylor, 1980) It’s kind of hard to believe that this record from Taylor — a Lions legend — has stood for 35 years. But if the passing attacks of today are any indication, one big game this year could put the mark in grave peril. Highest-Scoring Game (Both Teams) Current Record: 165 (Jacksonville 84, Nacogdoches 81, 2010) It’s kind of hard to believe that Jacksonville-Nacogdoches holds the top two spots on this list (their 85-79 matchup last year is the second-highest scoring game ever), but it’s the truth. Can two teams really light each other up en route to a new high score? The forecast is fairly good.
