Who's The New Guy?

A look at impact freshman at Texas colleges this fall.True freshman are contributing more each year in major college football. KD Cannon at Baylor Myles Garrett at Texas A&M were two of the top players in the state in their first year on campus. That trend isn’t likely to go away, and each Power 5 school in the state will be relying on true freshman to compete in the two-deep and provide meaningful snaps in 2015. Below, we take a look at a player from each school that has the best chance of earning significant playing time as true freshman this season.Texas – Malik JeffersonThe Longhorns lost their top two linebackers from the 2014 squad when Jordan Hicks and Steve Edmond ran out of eligibility. Mesquite Poteet outside linebacker Malik Jefferson will undoubtedly be one of the players on the Texas roster looking to fill the void. Jefferson was a five-star recruit who signified one of the first major recruiting wins for Charlie Strong and his staff in Austin. Jefferson was a December graduate and impressed this spring, leading everyone inside the program with little doubt that he’ll play a significant role in the Texas defense in 2015 and beyond.Texas A&M – Daylon MackMack’s recruitment turned into a rollercoaster towards the end of the cycle, but when the dust settled he reaffirmed his commitment to the Aggies and provided new defensive coordinator John Chavis a quick and explosive defensive tackle. Texas A&M signed numerous talented players on the offensive side of the ball, but Mack can help A&M right away in a position of need. The best defenses in the SEC are built around depth in the interior and Mack can contribute right away at the quick tackle position along with Alonzo Williams.TCU – DeShawn RobinsonThe Horned Frogs aren’t known for landing high-star players. Gary Patterson and his staff are better known for developing underrated talent into college contributors. Robinson, a native of Louisiana, could signal a change in those recruiting efforts. Rivals.com listed the cornerback as the ninth best player in Louisiana and one of the top 250 players in the country. Kevin White has moved on to the next level of football, and outside of Ranthony Texada, no one on the TCU roster has locked up a spot at cornerback. He’ll have plenty of competition, but the 6-foot, 180-pound playmaker could make noise in the Horned Frog secondary right away.Baylor – Blake LynchBaylor is an offensive juggernaut and Blake Lynch could be next in a long-line of wide receivers that crack the rotation as a true freshman. The former Gilmer standout has an ideal frame at 6-foot-4 to be a weapon on the outside for the new Baylor quarterback. Lynch is by no means slow, but he could provide a weapon underneath as guys like KD Cannon exploit down the field for the Bear offense. Lynch impressed at the Army All-American Bowl and has no desire to redshirt.Texas Tech – Breiden FehokoThe Red Raiders need help along the defensive line and the Hawaii product may be the best player Texas Tech signed in the 2015 class. Fehoko is 6-foot-3 and 290 pounds, giving him the ability to play at multiple positions in a 3-4 defense or at either defensive tackle spot in a 4-3 alignment. He is quick off the ball, can push the pocket and has the ability to run up and down the line to pursue ball carriers.
