Recruiting Roundup

Catching up with some of the latest recruiting headlines across Texas. In this week's Recruiting Around the State, we make stops across the landscape from College Station, to Houston, to San Antonio, and Dallas/Fort Worth. There were new commitments, new offers, and more under-the-radar types discovered along the way for a few of these in-state programs. Let's take a look.TEXAS A&MThe Aggies landed a rather large duo last week when Mineola's Riley Anderson and Austin Anderson committed to Texas A&M. The twin brothers helped anchor the Yellow Jackets offensive line all the way to the 3A D II State title game last winter. Riley (6-foot-5, 310), and Austin (6-foot-4, 295) held offers from many of the top programs including Texas, Baylor, and Auburn. They also offered and accepted an commitment from 2016 Fairfield athlete Charles Oliver recently. Oliver will get his first opportunity in College Station at defensive back.RICEThe Houston-based Owls often look for players that not only fit its schemes but might also might go unnoticed to a handful of the bigger programs. Alief Elsik DE Javante Hubbard is a great example. The 6-foot-2, 220-pound defender was offered by Rice last week and plays along the d-line for Elsik. In college, he would fit at outside linebacker in a Rice defensive front. He's also under the radar with only two offers at this point; Rice and Davidson. Hubbard took an unofficial visit to Rice last weekend and thoroughly enjoyed his stay. It also goes for senior-to-be DE/OLB Anthony Ekpe from Pflugerville Hendrickson, who committed to Rice on Friday. They are both the type of prospect Rice scoops up each year and often maximizes their potential. Add an extended offer to Odessa Permian DB Desmon Smith as well, his ninth such invitation. To aid in its recruiting efforts, Rice DE Christian Covington was drafted by the hometown Houston Texans on Sunday. That should be an added boost for head coach David Bailiff.UTSAHead coach Larry Coker and his staff have been on the recruiting trail of late. They visited Kempner last week and offered 3-star Jordan Ward. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound safety/OLB from Sugar Land was also offered by SMU last week, his first and second offers overall. The Roadrunners were also the first to offer Evan Fairs, a junior WR from Richmond Foster. He received his second when New Mexico offered on Tuesday. The UTSA staff is also hitting the JUCO circuit. They offered Snow College TE Dalton Fackrell last week. The 6-foot-4, 240-pounder holds offers from Houston, Toledo, Arkansas State, and Colorado State.UTEPUTEP extended a handful of offers recently, with a balance of high school and junior college potential mixed up.Formerly at Burleson Centennial and now at Arlington Martin, Hunter Donnelly, picked up one on Friday, the first for the 6-foot-2, 220-pound athlete. Also picking up offers were Los Angeles Valley College CB Eric Jenkins and El Paso Chapin WR Brannon Bullitt. Jenkins, the 5-foot-10 JUCO corner from New Orleans was also offered by Illinois and has tons of Big 10 interest.NORTH TEXASThe Mean Green continue to look for talent around the D/FW Metroplex. It's one of the recruiting tools the staff at UNT has as an advantage. The position of focus recently in wide receiver. They offered 2017 Woodrow Wilson wideout Charleston Rambo on Thursday and NE Oklahoma A&M College (Miami, OK) pass-catcher Shawn Thomas on Monday. Duncanville's Jaron Bryant was another junior offered by the UNT staff. They just don't have to go too far to find talent in the region. But they don't completely limit themselves. UNT also looks up north in Oklahoma. They're recruiting a pair from the Sooner state last week. Juniors' Broken Arrow OT Rowdy Frederick and Oologah HS linebacker Jimmy McKinney both picked up North Texas offersNot to be outdone, they hit the Houston region and offered the 6-foot-02, 299-pound Crosby tackle Keenan Murphy last week as well. That's what I call recruiting coverage for the head coach Dan McCarney and UNT Justin Wells is an editor of InsideTexas.com and a TexasFootball.com contributor.
