There is a terrific French phrase – “une chance inouïe” – that doesn’t have a perfect English equivalent. Roughly, the phrase (pronounced “oon shaw-nce in-you-ee”) means “a chance in a million”. But what it is really meant to convey is not just that something is unprecedented, but that the chance of that particular thing happening is so rare that that, in and of itself, is just as remarkable as the thing itself happening.
