4A-DI State Title Game
Denton Guyer vs. Georgetown
First of all, these are both spectacular football teams. But it's hard to look at this matchup and not see one major element that could decide the outcome — Guyer's gorund game vs. Georgetown's defense. You see, these Eagles have been unbeatable on that side of the ball all year — they buried Nederland, gobbled up Summer Creek, and swept their way through a tough district with a swarming attack that never lets opponents off the ground. But the one game that an offense did some damage to them was Angleton in the playoffs; well, Angleton runs the ball, and they run it a lot. If that theme plays out today, that could be trouble for still unbeaten Georgetown, because Guyer's ground game is hitting on all cylinders right now. Even though they had a size advantage, the Wildcats' 600-yard rushing performance last week vs. John Tyler was mind-boggling. QB Jerrod Heard rushed for more than 300 yards against the Lions, with D.J. Breedlove and Richard Whitaker each chipping in 100-plus. Whatever Tyler tried to do, Guyer adjusted and kept running. The Wildcats will do the same today against Georgetown — test the edges, run the zone read, and then, when the Georgetown defense comes up to play the run, look over the top for the big play downfield to a bevy of skilled WRs. Georgetown, with stellar QB Jake Hubenak, is going to get enough points to win. It's all going to come down to stopping the Guyer ground game.
Pick: Georgetown 37, Guyer 36
