The last time I bought myself a uniform for an athletic event was about 24 years ago. It was for a intramural team I played for during my college days on the 40 acres. The shirt said Sigma Alpha Mu on the front and on the back it had a number with EPSTEIN in bold letters.
I have lived the last quarter century with two basic life lesson rules….
1. If it sounds too good to be true it probably is.
2. If you are over 21 years old you should not wear a Jersey with a number on the back---- PERIOD.
On Saturday, with my 13 year old son as a co-pilot, I went to a local sporting goods store with a shopping list. This list included about a dozen items that I personally have never purchased before: a bean bag, a yellow penalty flag, pocket flip portfolio, striped jersey, black shorts, belt, whistle, lanyard and a few other odd items. I passed on the recommended shoe purchase because I had a pair of black tennis shoes that I rarely if ever get to wear.
$83.78 later I left with the feeling that there was no turning back…..I have skin in the game and I just took a big step in my “Paid Hobby” career.
I was told that the sharper an Official looks on the field the more respect they will get from angry coaches and fans. Time will tell on that wisdom--but I can say that looking in the mirror as I tried everything on, I did feel as if I at least looked like an official. Truth be told if I fail miserably in my quest for being an Official at least I now have a future Halloween costume.
I recently received an email from a representative from my local TASO chapter with some sobering advice. The email recommended that I start getting acclimated to the heat of the day. The email suggested going for a walk or perhaps mowing the lawn at 5:00 in the afternoon. This summer’s heat has been brutal throughout Texas…..It has been so hot that I actually saw two trees fighting over a dog!. With sub varsity games being played around 5:30 p.m. it is good advice.
