East/Centex report: Week 3

By David Smoak // Special to TexasFootball.com

With only a couple of exceptions the 2010 high school football season has been tough on the defending champions and long streaks, and nowhere is that more obvious than in East Texas.

A week ago, it was Gilmer and Longview going down with both losing and ending their long home winning streaks.

On Friday, it was two-time Class 3-A defending champion Carthage being punched in the nose by Chapel Hill, 49-16. The loss ended the Bulldogs 31-game winning streak. While I'm talking about Chapel Hill, congrats to second-year head coach Thomas Sitton on the victory. Based on the first two weeks of the season, Carthage losing wasn't so much a shock, they struggled to beat Jacksonville and then needed a final minute comeback to beat Lindale last week so they were working on borrowed time, but 49-14? And, yes, I know about their two stud defensive players being out with injuries. LB-Kendal Thompson is out with a knee sprain and safety Edward Pope is close to returning after nursing a meniscus injury.

Although it's not East or Central Texas, even Lake Travis had their streak snapped after losing to Aledo, and defending 5-A Division II Champion Abilene lost as well.

Talk about playing with a bullseye on your back…which is what happens when you're not only good, but championship good.

One defending champion, Daingerfield, continues to smack around whoever is in their path---and although it's very early, we could be headed for a tremendous showdown in late-December between the two-time defending champion Tigers and Tatum. But, that's getting a little ahead of ourselves, or is it?

Cayuga won a Class 1-A Division II state championship last season, and they were loaded with Division I talent. Head Coach Tommy Allison left for Jacksboro and I think some people felt like Cayuga would take a step back this season…and although that still might happen, the Wildcats continue to win under Greg Jenkins, who took over after winning a state championship in basketball back in the spring. Greg was very involved with the football program too, and I know he was excited about this opportunity.

Now, I mentioned Gilmer and Longview, and both are still reeling after another loss.

Gilmer was beaten by Jacksonville, 43-36, for their first back-to-back losses since 2000. It won't get much easier when the Buckeyes travel to Texarkana to play Liberty-Eylau this week.

Longview's John King has a silly-good overall record since taking control of the program in 2004 (70-12).

But, the Lobos are also facing back-to-back losses after watching Allen drive for a game-winning score in the final minute to win, 24-20. And, the road continues to be rough with games at Lufkin and then defending 5-A state champion Abilene in Plano.

In Central Texas, I witnessed one of the most bizarre games ever in Liberty Hill.

Just take it from me, it was a strange night at Panther Stadium in a game that never seemed to get much rhythm.

Liberty Hill's Daniel O'Neal returned a fumble 64-yards for a touchdown late in the fourth-quarter and it appeared to be a back-breaker for China Spring. But, the Cougars have a proud tradition of their own and senior QB Collin Wood found freshman Blaze Moorhead streaking down the left sideline for a 63-yard touchdown with just over 2-minutes remaining to win, 23-20.

I predicted Midway would beat Belton last week, but I don't think anyone could have seen what was going to happen. The Panthers scored early and often and completely throttled Belton QB David Ash and the Tigers. Midway is good, very good, and winning 60-26 won't hurt their momentum.

On a very good note, in fact---great note. Waco High running back Dennis Gibson is okay after a scary scene on Friday in the Lions 37-35 loss to Ellison. Gibson lay face down and wasn't moving after taking a hit during a kick return. Gibson was taken off the field by ambulance and to a local hospital. He was released at 1:00am on Saturday morning. I also spoke with Waco High head coach Danny Ramsey on Sunday night and he confirmed Gibson was feeling better and will return sometime soon.

Cameron Yoe is rolling in their new digs, Class 2-A. Yoeman just thumped Rockdale, 35-13. They were good in 3-A for many years and now they're set for what could be a deep run at a lower classification.

Big win for Willie Williams and La Vega on Friday night. Pirates were trailing 21-7 in the second quarter but found some fourth-quarter magic and rallied to win, 35-28. La Vega QB Devin McGowan found Tyree Jackson for a 17-yard go-ahead touchdown with 17-seconds remaining in the game. Also, watch out for freshman Jarvon Arnett, who returned a kick 95-yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 21-21.

Theere was an intriguing matchup in McGregor with TAPPS power Reicher playing the Bulldogs. McGregor had a gutwrenching loss at Crawford the week before, and fell 28-21 to Reicher. McGregor has another tough task this week at China Spring.

I brought up a potential showdown in Class 2-A in my East Texas summary---but I can't help but wonder if we'll see a Mart vs. Alto state championship game in Class 1-A Division I?

As was noted earlier, Alto crushed Tenaha 47-6, Mart is cruising through their early season schedule, destroying Dallas Life Oak Cliff, 50-0.

We can dream, can't we?

Have a great week.
