Lunchtime thoughts: Tidbits of news

By Travis Stewart/Texas Football  --Some news to absorb for the football mind.

J.W. Walsh is Elite
Not that anyone should be terribly surprised. Denton Guyer's dual-threat superstar has been named to an Elite 11 camp, something greats like Vince Young have on their resume. It's probably confession time on J.W. Walsh, who's pledged to OSU — as great a player as he is, it's taken me longer than it should have to come around on him as a college recruit. But guys I trust have been telling me for too long now that he's one of the state's very best prospects. I should probably give him his due — it's not often that guys with his kind of speed, arm strength and leadership qualities come along. I had a guy on Friday tell me a good story. The storyteller was at a Guyer practice this summer — just shorts and helmets — before the coaches were even out on the field, watching the players run some goal-line offense vs. defense. On one play, Walsh threw a dart of an out to a receiver, who turned directly into a defender and fumbled the ball he'd just caught. Before the defender even got a paw close, Walsh had closed the gap on a dead sprint, scooped up the bouncing ball and ran it in for a score. Now how many varsity QBs with nothing left to prove in their high school careers are doing that in June ... when no one's watching? Yeah, not many.
