July's Committments Posts

A&M,TCU BOTH ADD TALENT (7/29/09)Just a month before the start of the season, two of the biggest names left on the recruiting board have opted to stay in-state: Jake Matthews, a Super Team tackle out of Fort Bend Elkins, has chosen A&M, and Sam Carter, Katy Morton Ranch's dual-threat QB, has opted for TCU.

Neither of these moves are surprising. A&M and coach Mike Sherman fielded one of the Big 12's most inexperienced lines last season, and the running game paid a dear price. Big bodies for the trenches have been a public target for the Aggie recruiting staff; there's no better talent than Matthews. Born of impeccable pedigree, Matthews is the son of legendary NFL Hall of Famer Bruce, who dominated along the Houston Oilers' offensive line for years. Like his father, Jake is tall (6-foot-5) and very mobile, and he's athletic enough that he can pull with ease and really sink his hips in pass protection. He's got great footwork -- with he and fellow first-team Super Teamer Luke Joeckel both pledged to College Station, the Aggies could be headed for another signing class like 2003's, which netted them Cody Wallace, Corey Clark and Kirk Elder.
