Weekend Review: 2A bi-district play gives us upsets and overtime greats

The 2A Weekend in ReviewAmarillo River Road 25, Muleshoe 21
No score in Texas stunned us like this one did this weekend. After all, Muleshoe hadn't lost a football game since Littlefield topped it by a touchdown in November of 2007 (Interesting side note: It hasn't lost a game by more than seven points since November of 2006!) River Road hasn't even won a playoff game since 1998 ... astounding. As you would expect, Muleshoe led late in the fourth, 21-18. But with a little more than two minutes to play, River Road QB Sheldyn Van Winkle nailed Kristian Askins on a 31-yard touchdown strike to put his team in the driver's seat. And to think that River Road only got there when it recovered an onside kick to start that drive! The real hero has to be the River Road defense, which forced five turnovers, including four interceptions of Muleshoe QB Jared Skipworth, who is one of the state's top passers.
