Before most of us looked at the 5A AP All-State team, which was just released, we probably would have bet our money on Abilene RB Herschel Sims taking home the Offensive Player of the Year award. Not so -- Arlington Bowie QB Deric Davis earned the hardware for his prolific performance this season, throwing for more than 3,000 yards and almost 40 touchdowns for the surprising Vols. As far as numbers go, no one was better than Davis -- but in an ironic twist, his team was eliminated by Sims', Abilene, later in the postseason. And the Metroplex made it a sweep when Skyline LB Corey Nelson took home Defensive honors for his versatile efforts -- be it against the run, in coverage or on special teams, Nelson is a top-flight difference maker.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Deric Davis, Arlington Bowie
