Below is our latest installment of 'Texas Football Roundup,' with observations and news surrounding Texas high school (the latest developments at Southlake Carroll), college (a night game for UT in '05) and pro football as well as football recruiting.
The national headlines generated from steroid usage at Colleyville Heritage High School in February - which carried over to allegations at rivals Grapevine and Southlake Carroll high schools, has prompted a proactive approach from the Carroll ISD. At the CISD's school board meeting on Monday night, Carroll Senior High School principal Danny Presley gained approval on a proposal for parents to take responsibility about teen substance abuse. Starting with the 2005-06 school year, parents of CISD students in sports and other extracurricular activities in grades seven through 12 must attend a new substance abuse education seminar before their children are eligible for competition. "Our kids know that drugs and alcohol are dangerous, but they make choices to use them anyway," Dr. Presley said on Monday night. "The kids know what's going on. They know who's drinking, who's doing pot. It's the parents we've got to educate. There has to be accountability on all fronts." Carroll Superintendent Gary Mathews said that Presely's proposal will be added to the CISD student handbook. "This has students going to Mom and Dad saying, 'You have to take this class,' " he said. "That turns things on its ear in a good way." The CISD's planned 60-minute seminar will cover substance abuse trends, warning signs, prevention and the district's substance abuse policies. Don't expect the CISD to begin drug testing any time soon. The NCAA tests about 10,680 athletes annually, at a cost of about $271 per test, or about $3 million each year. Not in the budget.
