Second-Round Scores: District 26-5A unbeaten; Stratford upsets Cy Falls

Yesterday morning I declared District 14-5A a "power district" after it teams were off to a 6-0 start. Those north-Austin teams ended up going 7-1. But they've been topped: San Antonio Reagan and Converse Judson both won their second-round matchups, joining Smithson Valley and SA Madison in the third round and running 26-5A's playoff record to 8-0. ... Longview got past its recent playoff nemesis, South Garland, by shutting down SG's powerful offense. Longview held SG under 70 yards of offense in the first half of a 28-14 win. ... Four defending state champions lost this weekend (5A DII Cedar Hill, 4A DII La Marque, 4A DI Alamo Heights, and 1A DII Chilton), leaving just four 2006 state championship teams alive: Southlake Carroll in 5A DII, Liberty Hill in 3A DI, Tatum in 2A DI, and Alto in 1A DI. ... As a reader pointed out to me, Region III in the Class 4A Division II bracket is seeing some new faces. Livingston, Lumberton, Dayton and Waller earned the final four spots in the region. Those teams have a combined 58 playoffs appearances, not too bad. But the teams they beat to make it this far (La Marque, Texas City, Houston Yates and Houston Washington) had a combined 108 appearances, an average of 12 more per school. ... I'll close the way I usually do: The Statement Win of the Week. This goes to Kirbyville in 3A DII, which roughed up Caldwell, 49-28. Runner-ups: 4A Lake Travis (49-35 over Tivy); 4A New Braunfels (35-3 over Alamo Heights); 2A Salado (49-0 over Hitchcock); and 1A Maud (42-21 over Quinlan Boles).
