LAKE TRAVIS 27, ROUND ROCK WESTWOOD 20( p.m.)This game was supposed to fall on the shoulders of greatness. It wassupposedto be decided on the powerful arm of Lake Travis QB Garrett Gilbert, on the nimble feet of Westwood RB Princeton Collins. It was supposed to be decided in between the hashmarks and in the endzone.Unfortunately, it wasn't.With a game RR Westwood squad trailing Lake Travis, 27-20, with just 1:28 left in the game, the Cavaliers faced a third-and-11 from near midfield. Afraid to risk an interception or incompletion, coach Chad Morris opted for an end-around, but Westwood was all over it, and a gang of tackler swarmed over the ball carrier to drop him behind the line of scrimmage. Westwood called its last timeout to stop the clock, and the classic finish was perfectly framed. And then yellow flags pelted the turf like hail.Somewhere in the mess, a Westwood player did something you just can't do. I'm not sure what it was or who did it, and I'm not even sure I would say if I did know. It doesn't matter. It was a personal foul, and it gave Lake Travis an automatic first down with a running clock. In three knees, it was over.I know the better team won. Westwood made enough plays to be in it, but the Cavaliers were just better. Westwood made too many penalties, missed too many passes and left LT's Cade McCrary (203 receiving and 3 TDs) open too many times. But despite all that, they deserved better. But there's other stories to tell. Like QB Garrett Gilbert, who threw three beautiful touchdowns, all to McCrary, to further cement his legacy as an elite national quarterback. Or Westwood RB Princeton Collins, who ran his heart out from the first snap to the last. Despite the unfortunate and now infamous penalty, this was an excellent game.
