FINAL: Katy CINCO RANCH 21, SAN ANTONIO REAGAN 17(2:41 p.m.)Time is tight in a triple-header, so I won't be able to recap these games. Final score, KCR 21, Reagan 17. Great game, terrible ending. Next blog, Brownwood vs. Burnet, coming up soon.ANOTHER GAME, ANOTHER PENALTY(2:40 p.m.) Just like last night, this game just got decided on a personal foul call -- with Cinco punting and only 19 seconds left, Reagan roughed the kicker and gave them an automatic first down. Cinco just has to knee out the clock and this one's over. You've got to be kidding me. Only in high school. Cinco will win it, 21-17.CINCO IN CONTROL, 1:44 LEFT(2:30 p.m.) Cinco got a first down, and is still driving at its 40 with 1:44 left. Reagan just took its first timeout, so they can only stop the clock twice more. Another first down or two and this one's over.OH NO(2:27 p.m.) For the umpteenth time, Reagan looked golden one play, dead the next. After a 31-yard pass play to the Cinco nine after a great scramble by Walls, the next play saw a bad shotgun snap that Walls tried to pick up -- and missed. CInco snagged the ball immediately and now has possession at their 34 with 3:31 left and up 21-17. The Reagan fans are DYING down there.REAGAN FORCES STOP(2:22 p.m.) Reagan almost picked off two passes, but both fell to the turf, and the Rattlers had to settle for a punt return and now start from their own 27 with 6:55 left.WALLS FUMBLES AGAIN(2:18 p.m.) Walls was in the midst of a great run when he was wrapped up by several Cougars near the 10 and coughed it up -- Cinco immediately fell on it, and, just like that, the momentum is right back in the Cougar den.Cinco ball at its own 16 with 8:58 left and up 21-17.THIRD QUARTER ENDS, 21-17 COUGS(2:10 p.m.) As the third quarter wound to a close, we got our first spicy situation -- a nasty facemask personal foul on Cinco than turned into a bit of a scrum. That, plus Walls' awesome running, has put Reagan at the Cougs' 40-yard line and looking confident. We're set for a smashing fourth quarter. Buckle in.CINCO STALLS(2:04 p.m.) After a lengthy drive, a false start stalled out the Cougar drive, and Cinco finally got off a decent punt that rolled to the Reagan 20. The Cougs have changed it up and abandoned the run for the short passing game -- let's see what changes the Rattlers have up their sleeve. Cougs still up 21-17.REAGAN SPUTTERS OUT(1:56 p.m.) Reagan's side went nuts went Walls scampered in from 16 yards out for the touchdown, but the air went out of the stadium when it got called back for holding (and it was a pretty sketchy call). It just got worse when Walls got sacked on third down by Bobby Kieswetter, leading to a long field goal that was short and wide.Cinco, looking fired up, starts from its own 27. A score here would put the Cougs two scores up and firmly in control. Still 21-17 Cinco with 5:32 left in the third.REAGAN LUCKS OUT(1:51 p.m.) Reagan just hauled in a 38 yard pass deep into Cinco territory, but replays showed the ball probably popped out. The refs called it a catch, though, and after a holding penalty, Reagan has a 1st-and-20 from the Cinco 22 yard line.SECOND HALF KICKOFF(1:42 p.m.) After a nice hot dog break, I'm back for the second half.Reagan will lead things off on offense, and hopefully they'll be able to get off to the same start this half that they did in the first and recapture some of Cinco's momentum. By the way, Reagain has a sweet Rattler statue that blows steam out of its nostrils. I'm not making that up -- it's like eight feet tall. It's fantastic.Reagan just fielded the kick and will begin from its own 20.HALFTIME RECAP(1:12 p.m.) Well, for the third time in three games I'm scratching my head at halftime, wondering how I could have forseen a game going so differently than the reality I would be presented with. After a slow start, Cinco Ranch has charged back into this game and gripped it by the neck, taking a 21-17 lead through the efforts of the sensational Shane Ros, who has already thrown for two touchdowns and run for a third -- clearly an early favorite for game MVP. The height, speed and athletic ability of the Cougs' offense was ineffective at first, but it seems to be wearing down a Rattler defense that is starting to look a bit tired. Clayton's squad has run split backs and three wide on almost every single snap, and the bevy of options Ros has had on every play seems to have the boys in green a bit frustrated. But Rattler QB Derrick Walls is a proved competitor, and I'd expect he'll be coming out with his hair on fire in the second half. The offensive line play has to improve for Reagan, especially in the running game -- so far, most of the Rattlers' biggest plays have come off of broken tackles or busted coverage. The men in the trenches have to start making an impact. The defense needs to change things up a bit, too -- perhaps a DE contain on Ros to keep him from dancing around the outsides and prolonging plays that should be tackles for loss. All that said, this has been the best game of the Classic by far. Both teams are playing pretty well, and the crowds are awesome. We knew this was going to be an evenly matched game, and, in that respect, we're getting exactly what we expected.Finally.HALFTIME: CINCO 21, REAGAN 17(1:13 p.m.) Reagan ran a play up the gut and walked off the field, clearly discouraged. We're at half right now with Cinco up 21-17 -- I'll get a recap ASAP.SHANE ROS STRIKES AGAIN, 21-17(1:10 p.m.) Shane Ros is putting his stamp all over this game -- after the aforementioned long pass, he just scampered in on a little keeper from 14 yards out where he even outran a WR on a route! That's how fast he is. No one was looking in the right place, not even the people up here in press row. He's sneaky good. That puts Cinco in the lead for the first time, 21-17. Reagan will start from its own 20 with just 28 seconds left. Maybe taking knee is the smart option -- momentum is not in the Rattlers favor.REAGAN TURNS IT OVER ON DOWNS(1:03 p.m.) Reagan ran the ball but couldn't pick up the yardage, so Cinco took over from its own 21, and on the efforts of a 3rd-down bomb from Shane Ros, the Cougars have moved down to the Reagan 14 with just 39 seconds left in the half. This could be a chance to take the lead or tie right before half -- that would be a big boost for Cinco.REAGAN CLOSE BUT SO FAR(1:01 p.m.) Reagan is still driving, but faces a 4th-and-3 from the the Cinco 24 yard line with 1:21 left in the half. The drive has been going well, but a mistake here would give a capable Cinco offense another shot with more than enough time.SHANE ROS HAS THE MAGIC, 17-14(12:52 p.m.) During the offseason, Cinco coach Don Clayton said having Shane Ros, who was injured in 2007, back this year would be a huge boost. Well, he just proved it on 3rd-and-10 from the Reagan 37, when he ducked out of the pocket, changed direction to elude the defense, then hit a streaking wide receiver right in stride for a 37-yard touchdown pass. That was a beautiful play -- I guess the passing game got in sync after all.Cinco now trails 17-14, and Reagan will get the ball back with 5:27 left in the half from its own 34. Ros has shown he has what it takes -- now it's Walls' turn to respond.REAGAN FINDS THE ENDZONE, 17-7(12:45 p.m.) Reagan's drive looked like it was going to sputter out, but Derrick Walls threw a 39-yard bomb that was caught deep in Cinco Ranch territory, than the backup RB scooted in from 19 yards out to up the Rattlers'lead to 17-7.With 7:38 left in the half, a score would be nice for Cinco Ranch, but not essential. The passing game has to find a rythym though. The Cougs start from their own 49 after a brilliant return by Collin Buteaux.CINCO SENDS IT RIGHT BACK(12:40 p.m.) Three straight incompletions just brought on the Cinco punt team -- despite the height of the receivers, QB Shane Ros is having a hard time finding them in stride. There's been too many passes that have gone too hig or wide to either side. The punt was iffy once again, and now Reagan starts from its own 32. 9:52 left in the half, Rattlers up 10-7.WALLS MAKES A MISTAKE(12:37 p.m.) Reagan QB Derrick Walls just slipped up -- rolling away from pressure, he tried to pump fake but got hit from behind at the wrong time. The ball popped out, and Cinco fell on it to take over at the Reagan 41. Reagan still leads 10-7.REAGAN HOLDS(12:36 p.m.) The Rattlers just forced fourth down, and then DL Spencer Nealy snuck into the backfield to drag down the ball carrier for a loss and a turnover on downs. Reagan now starts from its own 44.FIRST QUARTER END, REAGAN UP 10-7(12:34 p.m.) The first quarter just ran to a close with Reagan still leading 10-7, but the game looks much closer now than it did for the first six minutes or so. Cinco will come back facing a 3rd-and-15 from the Regan 47.GREAT DEFENSE BY CINCO(12:30 p.m.) After some great run defense by Cinco on first and second down, Cougar Bobby Kieswetter leaped in front of a short screen pass and batted it away to force fourth down -- a nice read by the senior defensive lineman. After a nice punt return, Cinco starts from the Reagan 42.CINCO SCORES, 10-7(12:25 p.m.) Thereeeeeee's the athletes we were hoping for -- Cinco QB Shane Ros just guided his team to an 86-yard touchdown drive, capped by a beautiful 19-yard touchdown pass to a well-run fade route by WR Tyler Mack. He had to make a great diving catch to get it, but it was a great catch and it brings the score to 10-7.The run game looked great too, and there was even a bit of the option in there! What is this, Nebraska? Love it.Reagan just fielded the kick and starts its drive at its own 17, 2:22 left in the first.CINCO HOLDS(12:13 p.m.) The Cougars needed a hold, and they got one. Cinco forced a fourth down behind the blaring Cougar band -- yes, it's distracting even me -- and the Rattlers opted for a 24-yard field goal, which they converted.Reagan now leads 10-0,and Cinco starts another offensive drive from its 14 after a second-straight kick return penalty. With six minutes left in the first quarter, there's obviously still plenty of time. But I'd like to see the Cougars look a bit more in sync before too long.CINCO PUNTS AGAIN(12:09 p.m.) Cinco just has to punt from its own 7 -- always an adventure -- after the passing game narrowly missed a bomb touchdown. It gets worse -- the punt was a bad shank and went out of bounds at the 12 yard line. Reagan ball right there, up 7-0.INCREDIBLE, 7-0(12:04 p.m.) We knew Reagan QB Derrick Walls was a runner, but that was amazing -- dropping back into the pocket on 3rd-and-6, he was swarmed over by the Cinco defense, then somehow escaped to the outside through an arm tackle, picked up a block, and scampered down the sideline for a 61-yard touchdown run. He's not big, but he's fast. Cinco should have had him for a drive-ending sack. Instead, 7-0.Cinco now starts its second drive from its own 8. Giving up points like that to Reagan is tough stuff -- now you have to face its defense again.CINCO STUFFED EARLY(12:02 p.m.) What a swarming Reagan defense! Three plays, and three SMACKS by the men in green. Cinco ran good plays (two runs and a pass), the Rattlers just snuffed everyone of them out.Reagan now starts from its own 35.THE OPENING DRIVE(12:00 p.m.) And we're under way! Cinco has just fielded the opening kickoff and will begin the game's first drive from its own 30. Let's see how this vaunted offense fairs against coach Wetzel's defensive gameplanning. What a great atmosphere. The Reagan band rocks.TEAMS TAKE THE FIELD(11:55 a.m.) Both teams have now made their grand entrance, Cinco sporting the white jerseys with maroon lettering and Regan in those stellar emerald green tops and bottoms. Below me is a sea of matching green, and across from me a cheering mass of dark maroon. Call me a fashion snob, I don't care -- we've got great colors and uniforms today. It's early in the day, but both sides are filling up quick, and by the second quarter, we should have quite a crowd on hand.QUICK BREATHER(11:52 a.m.) Finally got a quick chance to check back in -- just for future reference, Katy Cinco Ranch will be receiving and heading left to right across your dial. The teams haven't taken the field yet, but we're still 12 minutes from kickoff.I expect this one to be close, but low scoring. Reagan's offense might struggle to move the ball without graduated RB Marcus Wright, but its defense is experienced and talented. I still like Cinco Ranch in this one, because the Cougars offense has both size and ability, maybe too much for the Rattlers. I'd say something like 13-10, Cinco, could be in order.I'll check in as soon as the teams run on the field. Thanks for tuning in!SIGNING ON(11:10 a.m.) A busy morning, so I'll be brief. Kickoff is at noon, so we'll see you then!
