AP 3A All-State Team: Stump Godfrey wins Offensive Player of the Year

At the quarterback spot, statistics are paramount. Nothing draws a writer's eye like 3,000+ passing yards or 40+ touchdowns, and kids with big numbers are far more likely to get picked up on the recruiting scene than someone still putting up 1970's box scores. But one stat trumps all others -- wins. And in that department, Gilmer QB Stump Godfrey is king. His Buckeyes finished the season to win the DI title, and in the process, Godfrey locked up the 3A Offensive Player of the Year award -- above guys like Ted Burns and Case McCoy. Not too shabby. Godfrey closes his career as one of the most prolific quarterbacks in state history, but still awaits a college destination. Jacoby Alexander, the best of a very deep all-state defensive line, takes home Defensive POY honors after cracking the 20-sack mark, one of the only players in Texas to do so.
