Abilene Wylie (12-1) vs. Gilmer (14-0)
Saturday, 6 p.m. at SMU’s Ford Stadium
Abilene Wylie has advanced to the state championship after falling in the state semifinals the past two seasons. But winning the state championship will be an even bigger challenge for Wylie because Gilmer is unbeaten and has the likely Class 3A player of the year in quarterback Darian “Stump Godfrey. Godfrey almost singlehandedly willed Gilmer to victory last week against Cuero with five touchdown runs, including a 68-yarder with 2:12 left for the winning points. Wylie doesn’t have one star player, instead relying on a stable of talented running backs and the steady play of quarterback Matt Preston.
Dennis Hall’s Prediction: Gilmer 38, Wylie 32
Jerry Forrest’s Prediction: Gilmer by 10
