2A Monday Recap: Muleshoe, Newton take care of business against 3A foes

Every Monday, we'll publish our "Monday Recap", which touches on all the games we previewed in our weekly "Games to Watch" segment (published Friday). We'll also make mention of a few other great storylines or matchups we think you should know about.

2A GAMES TO WATCH:
No. 6 Refugio at Vanderbilt Industrial: Refugio, 42-6
Refugio is very much a running football team, but on Friday the Bobcats showed that they also can pass the ball in a blowout win over Vanderbilt Industrial. Refugio quarterback Kyle Hendley passed for 261 yards and two touchdowns in the game, easily his best performance of the season, and Refugio remained unbeaten at 4-0. And this was against a quality opponent: Vanderbilt (3-1) was coming off a big win over 1A power Ganado and had overwhelmed its opposition with a stout defense and strong running attack. But Refugio knocked out Industrial running back Matt Anderson with an apparent knee injury on the Cobras' third play from scrimmage.

(3A) Borger at No. 8 Muleshoe: Muleshoe, 52-26
Muleshoe quarterback Jared Skipworth had another huge outing, passing for 409 yards and six touchdowns to make sure the Mules maintained their perfect record. Borger, a surprise team in the early part of the season, didn't have an answer to Muleshoe's high-powered attack, although Borger's 26 points scored represents the most Muleshoe has allowed in a game this season. Muleshoe finished with 540 yards and yet another impressive victory; the Mules (5-0) beat a strong Crane team last week. Borger dropped to 3-2 but still has more wins this year than it had all of last year, when the Bulldogs went 2-8.

(3A) Orangefield at No. 5 Newton: Newton, 62-40
Orangefield fired the game's first shots, jumping out to a 17-0 first-quarter lead. But that gave Newton plenty of time to come back and still win the game going away. The two teams combined for 965 rushing yards, with Newton getting 501 of those. That's exactly the type of game Newton (5-0) likes to play, at least from an offensive standpoint. Their defense doesn't usually give up that many yards or points. Newton running back Kelvin Bennett had a huge game, rushing for 275 yards and three touchdowns and also returning a kick for a touchdown. Orangefield (3-2) was led by quarterback Corey Huckabay, who rushed for 123 yards.

No. 7 (1A) Falls City at Karnes City: Falls City, 25-6
These two South Texas small school powers are only a few miles away, so there was a lot of pride on the line even though it was a non-district game. Falls City came away with full bragging rights after rolling to a dominating victory. Falls City (5-0) held Karnes City (4-1) to 105 total yards to assure that its top-10 Class 1A ranking was safe. Quarterback Will Kirchhoff had a big game for Falls City, rushing for 131 yards and two touchdowns. That was plenty of offense for Falls City because its defense wasn't giving up many yards or points. We predicted that whomever won the turnover battle would win the game, and both were blowouts in Falls City's favor. Falls City forced four turnovers and only committed one.
