That Garrett Gilbert was named the Class 4A Offensive Player of the Year should be no surprise. The QB of Lake Travis, the defending state champs, threw for more than 3,000 yards and 38 TDs (with just two INTs) during the regular season to earn the award.
But Gilbert had to beat out an incredible list of candidates. The second-team pick, Scotty Young of Denton Ryan, threw 65 TD passes before his team was eliminated from the playoffs. Saturday in San Antonio, two other worthy QBs, Sulphur Springs' Tyrik Rollison and Dayton's Cody Green, will square off for the Division II title. So Gilbert had to play so well to emerge at the top.
