Recruiting violations at Tech
It seems that Texas Tech has run afoul of the NCAA in the recruiting department, as multiple coaches across multiple sports were employing text messages as a means of contacting high school athletes after the practice was banned in 2007. As many as 10 football coaches were guilty of the minor infractions, but few, if any, are around to see the results -- Mike Leach's firing opened a few spots, and Ruffin McNeill's departure took care of most of the others. Though the infractions played no role in Leach's dismissal, they did result in several self-imposed penalties that have already taken effect -- Tech has lost a scholarship for the 2010 season and was allowed four fewer visits by high school seniors than the school's recent average. Those penalties and a full report have been sent to the NCAA, and while it is likely the NCAA will accept the case and close it, there is a chance further punishments could be handed out. That would seem a bit heavy-handed, and I feel certain the NCAA is far more concerned with the happenings out at USC.
